A Quick Guide to NEP 2020

The new National Education Policy (NEP) is set to be one of the best reforms in the education sector, India.

We have curated the top 11 major takeaways of NEP 2020:

  1. Say goodbye to different streams. Henceforth, there will be no separation between Arts and Science stream, which means students can opt for music/dance along with physics/biology or c++ with history.  

  2. Education in mother tongue will be prioritised and sign language for visually impaired learners will be standardized. 

  3. Coding to be learnt 6th standard onwards.  5+3+3+4 system to implement instead of 10+2.

  4. In the first of its kind move, transgenders to be given admission in all schools

  5. Increased focus on urban poor families. Revised schemes and syllabus to emphasise on tribal education.

  6. In Higher Education, there will be institutional Restructuring on 3 levels: Research Universities, Teaching Universities, and Colleges.

  7. Multiple entry and exit option in undergraduate. Steps to incorporate international universities to set up in India and India's top universities encouraged to go global. 

  8. National Research Foundation to finance, mentor and provide varying facilities to research and teaching universities. Some of the research areas to be given prominence are Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, Biotech, Climate Change and Population growth rate. 

  9. Agricultural Studies to be recognised as a Professional Course. Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha & Homeopathy to be mainstreamed. Skill-based training programme for General Duty Assistants (GDA), Emergency Medical Technicians and Laboratory Technicians.

  10. Revised facilities for teachers which include salary hike, incentive structure, housing, job preference in home town and no transfers. There will also be scholarships with guaranteed employment for teachers. 

  11. Quasi-judicial body to be constituted for the countrywide implementation. MHRD will now be Ministry of Education and not Human Resource.
