Un Violador en Tu Camino – A Rapist in Your Path has become an anthem for women around the world. The song is about the existing rape culture and victim shaming in Chile. However, ever since its first performance in late November, the song and its dance moves are trending across Latin America, Colombia, France, Spain and the UK.
The song was written by Lastesis, a feminist group from the city of Valparaíso; they give credit to Chile's women protesters for introducing their work to the world and thereby duly recognising their creation.
“The rapist is you/ It’s the cops/ The judges/ The state/ The president.”
“And it’s not my fault / nor where I was / nor what I wore”
“The rapist is you.”
The song is based on the work of Rita Segato, an Argentinian theorist, who believes sexual violence is a political problem than a moral one.
The largest performance of the song took place outside Santiago’s National Stadium which was a prison camp after the 1973 military coup in Chile. According to the Chilean Network of Violence Against Women, every two hours sexual abuse gets reported to the police, which makes 42 cases every day. In 2018, 25.7% of the sexual abuse cases led to judicial proceedings. According to Bárbara Sepúlveda Hales, spokeswoman for the feminist lawyer group Abofem,
“in many trials, the life and sexual behavior of the victim is exposed as if it were a justification for the aggression they suffered.”
Time and again, we see questions being raised on the survivors of sexual violence. No wonder the song has struck a chord with millions of women around the world. We encourage you to listen and share with your people. Become a part of this movement. And always remember, as a woman, you do not have a country, a religion, ethnicity and/or any other social identification. As a woman, you must stand in support of your tribe.
As a woman.
