Chloe McCardel Breaks Men’s World Record For Most Swims Across The English Channel

Australian swimmer Chloe McCardel completed her 35th swim across the English Channel to surpass Kevin Murphy's world record of 34. She took 10 hours and 40 minutes to achieve the feat and etch her name in history.

McCardel is one place short of breaking Alison Streeter's world record of 43 swims across the English Channel. Alison is known as the "Queen of the English Channel."

McCardel was seen holding a placard in her hands that shows the count of her path-breaking win on an ITV News twitter post. She said, "Super happy to finally hit my 35th English Channel crossing surpassing the men’s world record." She further added, "I’m in great spirits. I would like to have a little celebration this evening in England. I’m extremely lucky to be surrounded by so much love and support, from my English host to my support boat captains and crew, and I’m excited to celebrate this achievement together with them."

She told the Daily Telegraph after completing her feat that she hopes that she hopes to raise awareness about domestic violence, revealing that she is a survivor who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The 35-year-old on Saturday evening started her swim from Abbot’s Cliff beach near Folkestone and arrived in Calais, France just before 07:00 am the next day, covering a total of 21 miles, as reported by BBC.


She told the Daily Telegraph after completing her feat that she hopes that she hopes to raise awareness about domestic violence, revealing that she is a survivor who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

"I've also been thinking a lot about the people in lockdown, particularly women facing domestic violence, and I'm proud to be able to be a voice for those who don't have one."

McCardel holds multiple records for her endurance swimming, including the longest ratified unassisted ocean swim in 2014 where she covered 77.3 miles (124.4km) in 41.5 hours in the waters around the Bahamas. In 2017, she became the first person to attempt a quadruple non-stop crossing of the English Channel.
