The former captain of England’s women’s cricket team, Clair Connor is set to become the first female president of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). She was nominated by Kumar Sangakkara, the former captain of Sri Lankan team, and the current President of MCC who is also the first non-British MCC president.
"I am deeply honoured to be named the next president of MCC,” said Connor, 43.
October 1, 2021 will mark the historic event when Connor will take charge of her new office.
In 1995, Clare Connor made her England one day International debut. Five years down the line, she became the captain of the cricket team, and led it to the 2005 Ashes victory. In 2007 she was appointed ECB's head of women's cricket. She received the honour of a life-member of the MCC after her retirement in 2009.
Connor recalls her journey as that of admiration and hard work.
“We often need to look back to see how far we’ve come. I made my first visit to Lord’s as a starry-eyed, cricket-obsessed nine year-old girl at a time when women were not welcome in the Long Room. Times have changed.”
