Day ( WTF does it matter) of Quarantine

Scrolling through Instagram feeds (what else is one supposed to do, if there’s no inclination to read, write, and paint or make Dalgona coffee) I arrived at Rujuta Diwekar’s IGTV live feed where she was demonstrating a DIY Sirsasana.

For the dummies, Ms Diwekar’s the Indian who made the zero famous long after a certain Mr. Aryabhatta discovered it in some ancient period. For most of India had never heard of size zero before Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor (then), now Khan unleashed it unto the India consciousness, and Ms. Rujuta Diwekar was the yoga/diet instructor/coach who helped her achieve it. Again for the dummies, Sirsasana is the ancient yoga pose of standing on one’s head to achieve innumerable benefits. It is supposed to be a magical elixir that tightens the core, expedites weight loss (what doesn’t), helps in hair loss, increases focus, calms the brain. In short, it does everything but send you to moksh. (the Indian equivalent of salvation).

So as Ms. Diwekar, explained the intricacies of the Asana, my mind couldn’t help but wander and wonder at how the world had also performed the equivalent of the same.

Our lives have just turned topsy turvy and things no longer look, feel or are the same. Things that once seemed irreplaceable or important haven’t been touched in days. Priorities have shifted and how. The 21 pairs of shoes and 17 shades of lipstick are all gathering dust somewhere. We no longer think of things, expensive or otherwise. Right now, it’s just the basics. Right now, it’s only about being and keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe.

Well, the Sirsasana cannot be held for long, it isn’t sustainable. One has to come upright. And I am sure the world too, will soon do the same. We just need to hope and pray to whichever God’s listening that the benefits of the asana accrue to the human race.
