Kanta Maruti Kalan Stood 7 Hours In Rain To Warn Passing Vehicles About Open Manhole

Updated: Aug 12, 2020

Kanta Maruti Kalan stood for 7 hours in heavy rains to ensure no accident happens as she opens the manhole amidst rising water level and the waterlogged street of Mumbai, India. The 50-year-old performed the duty of government officials. She rose to the occasion, managed to unclog the waterlogged street, and stood for nearly 7 hours to warn people of the open manhole.

Was this a duty of a citizen? No.

Kalan's selfless act of kindness especially when she lost her belongings and 10 k savings to heavy rains and flood is worthy of applause and recognition. She is a flower vendor who stays with her two daughters on the footpath where the waterlogging took place.

Here's a glimpse of a viral social media post.

Sameer Patekar, who shot the video of Kalan from his home across the street, agrees that were it not for her, the street could have remained flooded for long. “My bike was swept away by the water. I found it 100 m away. My car was also damaged. Repairs will take Rs 50,000. The road gets flooded every time it rains heavily.”
