Sub Lieutenant Shivangi will be joining Naval operations on Monday. She will be taking control of a Dornier aircraft, which are used by the Navy for maritime surveillance, rescue operations, medical evacuation and other such things. Shivangi, who is 24-years-old, is India's first women Navy Pilot marking a milestone for the country's armed forces.
India has been setting a record for the inclusion of women in non-medical roles in armed forces since 1992. In 2014, India's army had 3 per cent women, the Navy 2.8 per cent and the Air Force performed best with 8.5 per cent women. In 2015 India opened new combat air force roles for women as fighter pilots, adding to their role as helicopter pilots in the Indian Air Force
In May 2016, Flight Lieutenant Bhawana Kanth became the first woman pilot to qualify to undertake combat missions on a fighter jet.
Two more Woman Naval Pilots will join sub-Lieutenant Shivangi by December 21.
