Massive Protests in Belgrade

The protest against dictatorship, censorship, and intimidation by the citizens of Belgrade, Serbia is falsely framed as a protest against protective measures for COVID-19. To put things into perspective, in 2012 Serbia elected the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) into Parliament. In 2017, Aleksandar Vučič was elected as the President. Since then media was majorly under the control of the government. 2018 was marked with murders of dissenting journalists, attempted murders of members of the opposition party leading to a massive protest in the country. In 2019, Protests continued, but no actions were taken. In March 2020, the President announced one of the strictest lockdowns in Europe. May 2020, the lockdown was uplifted. The protesting citizens were back as their protest was against the dictatorship, one-party government. In the meantime, the SNS Party was able to gain 188 seats from 250 in the Parliament, thereby ensuring its second term. When people came on the streets to protest, the government responded with brutal, draconian measures.
With two nights of continuous state brutality, the Government has now come out with restrictive measures on public gatherings.
The biggest fear among the protestors is on the government leaning towards Russian and Chinese model, thereby bringing civil, minority and LGBTQ rights under a massive threat.

We express our solidarity towards those injured and hope to raise awareness behind the objective of the protest: against dictatorship and not against pre-emptive COVID measures.
