The 2020 Nobel Alternative Award was handed out to Nasrin Sotoudeh, a social and human rights activist imprisoned in Iran who shared this prize with three other activists from Belarus, the United States Nicaragua. What is common in the activities of these activists is their efforts to achieve equality and freedom. The Right livelihood Award Foundation announced the winners of this year's award on Thursday (October 1) in Stockholm, Sweden. The 2020 award will be conferred jointly to Nasrin Sotoudeh, a human rights activist from Iran, Alash Bialyatsky, a Belarusian pro-democracy activist, Brian Stevenson, a US social rights activist, and Lottie Cunningham Ren, a Nicaraguan activist fighting for indigenous rights. It was said by Ole von Oxkol, director of the Nobel Alternative Foundation, that the Foundation decided to pay attention to the global threat to democracy. Oxkol said the struggle for equality, democracy, justice, and freedom are what all four winners of this year had in common. Explaining Nasrin Sotoudeh's eligibility for the award, he mentioned her efforts to represent women, children, and political prisoners, leading to Nasrin's prosecution and imprisonment. Reza Khandan, the husband of Nasrin Sotoudeh, said in his thank-you comments to the Right livelihood Award Foundation that her family has been going through difficult times. The government thinks it can tear apart our family with more violent abuses," he said, referring to the temporary detention of Mehraveh Khandan, their daughter, 38.5 years prison sentence, as well as the flogging of Sotoudeh and the blocking her bank accounts. The € 90,000 award ceremony will be held virtually on December 3 in Stockholm, Sweden.
