The world No. 116 Shelby Rogers defeated world No. 9, Serena Williams, out of the Top Seed Open in Lexington. Williams was expected to advance to the semi-finals, but Rogers took over. The former world No. 1 Williams will be now eyeing for US Open.

Serena has so far played 967 singles matches where she has lost only four times against an opponent ranked outside WTA top 100. For Shelby Rogers defeating Serena Williams was a dream come true. The 27-year-old got the best of Williams 1-6,6-4,7-6(5) in the quarterfinals. She said, “It’s every kid’s dream when they’re growing up, watching her play, to be able to do something like that." This was Rogers's first WTA semifinals since 2016.
The 23 times Grand Slam winner Serena Williams said post-match, "I could play a lot better, that’s the most thing that I can take. It’s good to know I can play a lot, lot, lot better," Metro UK reported.
