Stereotypes on ageism redefined by the "Queen of Pop": Madona

There are certain kinds of stereotypes or ideas implanted forcefully in the minds of women by different people from different generations which makes women uncomfortable in their own skin, Ageism being one of them.

Madonna Louise Ciccone, also known as the "Queen of Pop" since the 1980s was among those women who decided to stop listening to the comments on ageism and rise above all the stereotypes. When questioned about the same, the singer said "It's an outdated, patriarchal idea that a woman has to stop being fun, curious, adventurous, beautiful and sexy past the age of 40. It's ridiculous".

She has influenced the entertainment industry, the media, and society as a whole by being the living proof of the saying that "age doesn't matter". Although she's ranked as the best selling female recording artist of all times by the Guinness World Records, she had to face persistent sexism and ageism throughout the years.

Madonna is known to have redefined the widespread standards attributed to older women, from time to time by challenging those overused and hackneyed ideas that people have about older women. She has openly described that it's nothing wrong with being sexy or dating younger men and succeeding in a career even after a certain age.

"Do not age, because to age is a sin"

She received the Woman of the Year award at Billboard Women in Music in 2016. The singer had often spoken about the rules that she was expected to abide by as a female performer. "Do not age, because to age is a sin", she said and remembered how she was criticized for being above 40. She prefers to do live shows because there she can interact with her fans while there's a ninety percent chance, according to her, that her songs won't be played on radios and in Television because she is above the age of 35.

Once she said in her Billboard speech that people consider her controversial because of how desperately she is trying to seek attention to which she replied "I think the most controversial thing I have ever done is to stick around".

The actress and songwriter is in her sixties and a single mother of four children but she has no plans of slowing down. She has ridiculed or overlooked many orthodox ideas of being a "perfect woman and mother" because she believes that a woman should have the right to look and feel beautiful or sexy despite her age, just like men. She has inspired many women during the past years and we hope that she continues to do so.
