The power of social media to catch rapists and sexual assaulters

Tehran police chief Hossein Rahimi says a man accused of raping female students on social media has been arrested. Mr. Rahimi said: "Following numerous complaints in cyberspace from girls, especially female students, who said that they had been harassed by a person named 'K.A' and hurting the public sentiments of the community, especially the women of Tehran security police officers. "The man was arrested after identifying his hideout."

Iranian media have named this defendant as "Keyvan Imamverdi." The police asked the plaintiffs to refer to the Tehran Public Security Police" and make sure that their identities will be preserved. In recent days, several Twitter users have shared similar stories of a rapist. All of these users say that a person anesthetized and raped them after inviting them to his house. Reports of the arrest of Keyvan Emamverdi have provoked widespread reactions on social media. Many users are reiterating the power of social media and Twitter to enable them to express their demands and their impact on society.

One group emphasizes that now, after the arrest, it is necessary for some of those who told the story of the rape on Twitter to file a formal complaint so that the case can be investigated for rape and not reduced to the charge of "disturbing public opinion." Some users in the highly emotional atmosphere offer various punishments for him, from "execution" to "mutilation." A group of users also stressed the need to continue to support rape victims until the case is concluded.
