The German association of judges honours Nasrin Sotoudeh, an Iranian lawyer and human rights activist, with the Human Rights Award. The association's directors conveyed that the award is due to her courageous and tireless commitment to human rights and the rule of law. Barbara Stockinger and Joachim Lublinghof, directors of the German association of judges, announced on Wednesday (September 2nd) that this year's Human Rights Award will be given to Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh, an Iranian lawyer and human rights defender.

"Sotoudeh has become a symbol of Iranian civil rights because of the unwavering and genuine commitment to human rights and the rule of law," they said. The directors of the German Judicial Council emphasized Sotoudeh, now on a hunger strike in prison, requires the broadest international support.

Ms. Sotoudeh is on a hunger strike in Evin Prison to question the unfair as well as terrible conditions of prisoners despite the spread of the Coronavirus. In recent days, thousands of people on social media have appealed the release of Nasrin Sotoudeh. Institute for Human Rights Defenders have lent support to such actions. Having been charged with conspiracy against national security and disturbing public opinion, Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison and 148 lashes.
The German Judges' Human Rights Award is handed out to individuals or entities in the judiciary, the prosecution, or lawyers going through the hardships of life, ruin their health and personal freedoms to sustain and reinforce the rule of law. The prize was first awarded in 1991. The last time it was presented to Nguyen Van Dai, a Vietnamese human rights lawyer in 2017.
