The show that started in 1994 and ended after a decade later continues to be the reason for millions of laughter, moments of joy, and to their credit, profound teachings on life. It's like a show that made us laugh, and subtly imparted lessons of life.
1. Do what your heart says not what people around you
Be it Chandler's decision to quit his job and start a new, or Pheobe's unconventional morning run, these friends taught us to remain true to our hearts. Listen to what it says, and not what people around have to say.
2. It is ok if things don’t go as we plan
Rachel left in the middle of her marriage, she let go of her luxuries and started her life from scratch. The moment when she says, "I’ve got magic beans”? What she really meant that even though her life didn't turn out the way she planned as a child, be it with respect to the money, husband, or a successful life like her other rich friends, still she knew it is okay because she had her magic beans, her real friends who always stood by her.
Remember, it's the quality of life lived, not the quantity. Above all, the love respect we gave and received that makes all the difference.
3. Money Doesn't Ensure Happiness
You remember how Joey used to take money from chandler during his struggling days. First few seasons he was practically broke and unemployed yet the only guy who always always put his friends above him. He was smiling, laughing like a care-free toddler. Not only Joey, but even Rachel knew how to pull herself or look for small joys after she gave up her luxurious life.
In fact, every character had to go through a tough phase in life, but they never let their circumstances take over their happiness. They all worked together to rise up, happily.
4. Be Unique, be you!
All of them were weird in their own way and not for once did they shy away from their innate character. They embraced and accepted who they are. Even Chandler did! Monica was a cleanliness freak, and equally in love with her attribute. Pheobe, well, Pheobe was an epitome of uniqueness, and so much in love with herself. Joey never shares his food, he knew it and owned it. So did Ross and Rachel, embraced, accepted as and who they were.
5. Break-ups don't mean you can't fall in love again
Who can forget Monica and Richard, how much they were in love, and yet had to let go of each other? The beauty of their break up was a realization of what they both were looking for from a relationship. When they understood that their end destination is not same, they took the call and parted their ways. Of course, it was difficult. But hey, Monica did find Chandler. Can we complain?
The point being, there's always love waiting for you, all you need is love within and a belief that a break up is not the end of the world. You too will find your chandler or Monica.
6. Being single is not all that depressing
Joey was the only character who didn't find love in the series, but he was still the happiest and most content among them all. Some people are just built that way. They find love in their friends, families, books or food like Joey did.
Joey literally taught us that being single is equally satisfying. One doesn't have to fit in the so-called societal norms.
All we have to do is look for our happiness.
7. Breaking stereotypes
Be it the surrogacy or adoption, or lesbian parenting, this one serial smashed the long-entrenched stereotypes. Carol and Susan (Lesbian couple) raise Ben lovingly with equal participation by Ross. Phoebe becomes a surrogate mother for his brother's children. Monica and Chandler go for adoption, and Rachel decides to raise Emma as a single mother.
The weird thing is all of this still makes so much sense. We still need to smash norms against adoption, single parenting, LGBTQ, surrogacy etc.
